Our History

“Since 1959 Green Velvet Sod Farms has continued to grow in size and service.”

Officially started in 1959 by Ray and Mary Tischer, Green Velvet began as a small farm in Bellbrook, Ohio. Ray and Mary grew up in Oakwood, Ohio; Ray worked in his father’s family hardware business. With the purchase of the small farm in Bellbrook, Ray had a homebuilder-friend who asked him to consider growing the new phenomenon in home landscaping…sod. Ray and Mary started with about 4 acres, slowly purchased equipment and, literally, grew the sod business.

In 1972, Ray was able to sell Tischer Hardware and devote all of his time and energy to Green Velvet Sod Farms. In the 1980’s Ray and Mary’s customers started asking for seed, fertilizer and other products. Green Velvet again grew in response to customer needs.

Ray and Mary were fortunate to have their son , Randy and his wife, Beth Tischer take over the business in 1987, allowing them to retire and play with their boats on a lake in Northern Michigan.

Green Velvet's North Farm

Randy and Beth Tischer have continued to grow the business in response to customer needs, such as hydromulch, athletic field solutions and plant health & soil amendment products. Sod production moved to the Snider Road Farm in Clark County in 1990, where Green Velvet grows nearly 600 acres of turfgrass sod. Green Velvet Sod Farms also markets a wide variety of golf turf, sports turf, landscaper and ground maintenance products.

Randy states “Sod brings us to the party, but we’re also able to offer a large selection of turf  & ornamental products at prices very competitive with national chains. A small regional supplier can compete with nationals on price, but will excel in customer service.”

Today, Green Velvet Sod Farms remains a family-run business that takes great pride in its team of employees and the superior service they provide you, our customers!
